Advance Knox Underway with Advisory Committee Application and Project Website

Knox County is embarking on Advance Knox, a comprehensive planning process that will guide land use and transportation decisions in Knox County in the future.

The project will analyze population growth projections, land availability, and infrastructure conditions. It will also incorporate an in-depth analysis of the county’s transportation network, including safety, capacity, and multi-modal access. Although this plan pertains to the land and road network of the unincorporated parts of Knox County, the City of Knoxville and Town of Farragut have a vested interest and will serve as stakeholders throughout the process.

The project was initiated by Mayor Jacobs in May of 2021 when the search for a consultant was announced. A consultant team led by Kimley-Horn and Planning NEXT was selected in late 2021. The project team, which includes the consultants, Knox County staff, and Planning staff, have started work on the project through branding, developing a website, forming stakeholder and advisory groups, and doing background research.

To provide easy access to all information related to the project, the Advance Knox website has been launched. This site will house documents, news updates, a timeline, meeting information, opportunities to get involved, and contact information. Those interested in learning more and staying up-to-date are encouraged to visit advanceknox.org.

Another key task currently underway is that stakeholder groups are being formed to help guide the process. To ensure that the plan is representative of the diverse interests and geographic areas of Knox County, the project team is now recruiting individuals to apply for the Advance Knox Advisory Committee. Those applying should live, work, or represent a business or community organization in Knox County. Committee members will bring different perspectives to the process and will advocate for the project by encouraging community participation.
